This hobbit house comes complete with productive garden and lake. A bountiful feast of fruit and vegetables including radishes, turnips, watermelons, cabbages, cauliflower and carrots might keep the hobbit going for a couple of meals!
For the base, the hobbit’s house and the surrounding mounds I made a large rectangular Victoria sponge and filled it homemade strawberry jam. I simply cut it and carved it to get a rough mound for the house.
Not just sugar, sugar and more sugar!
Granted, there is a high sugar content here, but good quality fondant icing and marzipan make all the difference so things are not synthetic-tasting.
I not only coloured the fondant and the marzipan with a little powdered food colouring, I also flavoured them with different fruit powders and chocolate.
That way, each item tastes of something other than just sugar!
Everything is edible
Everything really is edible, including the Hobbiton sign that was made using coloured rice paper, edible ink and a chocolate-flavoured fondant icing post that was left to dry until it became firm.
Soil to be eaten!
I made soil out of blitzed chocolate and crushed biscuits: it really is something you can dive into with a spoon and not surface!!
A green, green grass
The grass covering the hobbit house is a mixture of coloured coconut, grated fondant icing (it grates easily!) and crushed pistachios.
More cake ideas?
My post for making cakes, with recipes for several classic cakes and decorating tips, is here.
This is so pretty and detailed. I love all your cakes, the decoration is really well thought out and creative. So clever the use of coloured coconut for the grass, i was wondering how you got it so grass textured!

Thank you for your very kind words. Ah yes the grass: took a fair bit of thinking so it was not 1 dimensional and then one of those lightbulb moments when I thought “of course…”

It’s funny, when I saw the title ‘Hobbit Cake,’ I immediately thought of seed cake. Flavored with caraway seeds, with a pound cake-like consistency. In the first chapter of ‘The Hobbit’, seed cake is one of the things (among many others) that the dwarfs lift out of poor Bilbo’s pantry.

Ah yes, seed cake, of course. And very lovely it is too. Perhaps a fun cooking session is needed to replace the contents of his pantry.
